It is not uncommon to hear Software Defined Networks SDN compared to Software Defined Wide Area Networks (SD-WAN). SD-WAN is a commonly used alternative solution which allows organizations to link together numerous locations through the use of broadband and MPLS. The main function of SD-WAN is to deliver a Wide Area Network (WAN) which connects multiple sites together. In contrast, SDN is used to create networks that can be modified quickly in line with an enterprise's needs.

SDNs were designed originally to operate on local area networks (LAN) but iQuila has been a complete game changer and can now extend layer 2 connectivity to any geographic location creating a secure overlay network connecting diverse locations over standard internet lines Virtual Extended Network (VEN). The VEN can be installed and configured like a normal LAN service while SD-WAN has to be managed and configured by a vendor.

iQuila VEN is encrypted end to end and is subject to all the standard LAN security protocols so protects your network and secures your endpoints.

SD-WAN is used to manage diverse internet connections and route traffic to avoid the use of expensive MPLS lines as SD-WAN virtually bonds the transport links available. iQuila VEN on the other hand will create a virtual layer 2 network over those transport links and unlike SD-WAN VoIP traffic can be prioritised ensuring QoS.

A number of questions are always asked which relate to the traffic handling abilities of SD-WAN but they are not relevant to VEN as this creates a network at layer 2 which is viewed as an adjacent node connection so latency is reduced and connection speed generally increased. Within iQuila is the ability to increase the number of data streams to overcome poor connection speed and reduce latency.

SD-WAN is basically old fashioned technologies combined and repackaged with a lot of techie speak and presented as something new. It is cumbersome and difficult to install and configure so if you choose to go this route the main considerations incorporating SD-WAN as your connection technology is who do I partner with because the vendor will do the installation, configuration and the ongoing management of the service.
